Whispering Glaciers (2024-2026)

In late July and early August 2024, Svalbard experienced a dramatic temperature spike, with average temperatures rising approximately 4°C above normal for this part of the Arctic Circle. Inspired by this and other concerning environmental events, *Whispering Glaciers*, an ongoing project by Filipe Pais and Erik Geslin, is a mixed-media installation that invites audiences to explore fragments of Svalbard’s visual and binaural soundscapes. The project aims to create an audiovisual archive of an environment likely to undergo significant transformations in the coming years.
In June 2025, the CNAP team travelled to Svalbard to observe and document the archipelago’s unique environment, capturing video, photography, and soundscapes. This material gave rise to a VR experience and a sound archive, whose recordings can be freely downloaded and reused. A blog documenting the expedition and the development of the project can be found here.
This project was made possible through a 2024 pre-maturation grant from Cultiva.
